Cameron's words truly resonate with anyone who creates。I would have to write pages to explain how fiercely insightful and helpful this guide is。 Cameron's words truly resonate with anyone who creates。I would have to write pages to explain how fiercely insightful and helpful this guide is。 。。。more

A very practical book on unleashing creativity。 I loved the exercises and enjoyed the structure of the book。 Will definitely go through it another time in the future!

2。5 star ratingSome parts were sensibly agreable i。e。 the parts on artistic self motivation and reflection as well as commune。On the downside the audiobook which I listened to had me wondering if the author is some eccentric commune leader with her intermittent and not so appreciated songs and humming。

This book was a great listen on Audible。 I would prefer the paperback version of this to properly comb through the activities。 So far, the Morning pages have allowed me to give permission to myself for me to make space in my own life。 This allows for small freedoms and more productive days。 It has been the monumental lesson in the book for me so far。 To give space to what I'm thinking about。 This change alone would make a book, and I'm grateful that Julia has written her journey。 Thank you, Juli This book was a great listen on Audible。 I would prefer the paperback version of this to properly comb through the activities。 So far, the Morning pages have allowed me to give permission to myself for me to make space in my own life。 This allows for small freedoms and more productive days。 It has been the monumental lesson in the book for me so far。 To give space to what I'm thinking about。 This change alone would make a book, and I'm grateful that Julia has written her journey。 Thank you, Julia。 Your ripple helps the whole world。 。。。more

This 12-week course in removing blocks and acting on creative drive was a joy and balm for me。 I plan on continuing my morning pages and artist dates and reviewing the chapters over time。

Went into this slightly skeptical, but followed through and opened myself to whatever I was reading and I have seen a profound change in my life。 Highly recommended to anyone struggling in their creativity, it's basically self therapy and it can change your life for the better :) Went into this slightly skeptical, but followed through and opened myself to whatever I was reading and I have seen a profound change in my life。 Highly recommended to anyone struggling in their creativity, it's basically self therapy and it can change your life for the better :) 。。。more

I have had perhaps one of my most creative and (artistically) fulfilling periods in my life since i started with the Artist’s Way。 Never have I given myself the chance to create in such a simple and natural way。 For me personally, the book showed me for the first time that if we want to do something, nothing prevents us but ourselves。 My ideas no longer seem as overwhelming as before because, following Julia Cameron’s advice, I take it a step at a time and focus on the process and the persistenc I have had perhaps one of my most creative and (artistically) fulfilling periods in my life since i started with the Artist’s Way。 Never have I given myself the chance to create in such a simple and natural way。 For me personally, the book showed me for the first time that if we want to do something, nothing prevents us but ourselves。 My ideas no longer seem as overwhelming as before because, following Julia Cameron’s advice, I take it a step at a time and focus on the process and the persistence rather than sabotaging any effort because the vision is too big。 I personally find the book brilliant with its simplicity and I have adopted the morning pages as a regular part of my day much beyond the book, rather than just a programme to follow。 Highly recommended for anyone who needs some courage and wants to bring more creativity in ANY form in their lives。 。。。more

It changed how I live, but that was partially due to the weekly meetings a few friends and I had。 So I'd recommend it, but find a group first (we started with 7 people, we were down to 4 by the end)! And if you don't find one, wait until you do。 It changed how I live, but that was partially due to the weekly meetings a few friends and I had。 So I'd recommend it, but find a group first (we started with 7 people, we were down to 4 by the end)! Reading this book is like meditating, you are talking to yourself, trying to understand yourself。 It isnt just about creativity, its about connecting you and your inner self, the inner child inside you。 Though I cant claim if im getting more creative after finishing this book, I believe that I have learnt to be tolerant, to cherish myself and to acknowlege my own worth。

I plowed through most of this book when it was pub'd in 1997, after a friend who had invited/coerced me to join her in several rec dept art classes in the mid 90s - including Painting Your Inner Mandala (which was most enlightening) and Yes, YOU Can Draw (which turned out to be true)。 I learned some key elements about being creative, ones that I still employ 20+ years later。 And at times I felt a bit overwhelmed, almost as if the work being proposed to find that spiritual path to creativity was I plowed through most of this book when it was pub'd in 1997, after a friend who had invited/coerced me to join her in several rec dept art classes in the mid 90s - including Painting Your Inner Mandala (which was most enlightening) and Yes, YOU Can Draw (which turned out to be true)。 I learned some key elements about being creative, ones that I still employ 20+ years later。 And at times I felt a bit overwhelmed, almost as if the work being proposed to find that spiritual path to creativity was impeding my creativity! I was hoping that I would find the artist way to higher creativity in this book, but it mostly felt like the book was a long blog post or maybe a diary that someone just felt like printing up。Unfortunately this book didn't do much for me or my creativity。 I was hoping that I would find the artist way to higher creativity in this book, but it mostly felt like the book was a long blog post or maybe a diary that someone just felt like printing up。Unfortunately this book didn't do much for me or my creativity。 。。。more

It was a little preachy, religious for me, but contained some great ideas and felt a bit inspirational at times。 Glad I read it, but it would have landed much more for me if I had read it when I was young and believed all that kind of advice。

Some people might find it interesting。 I had to stop before “Week 1”。 Too new-agey for my taste。

Good exercises and practices to help connect with your creative side。

Felt some resistance at first as it seemed too new-agey。 But towards the end I’m convinced that this book is a useful tool in understanding and working around the creative blockages I experience。 The strategies presented aren’t completely new to me but are well-structured so I’m getting myself a copy。

Writing the Morning pages is a habbit to me at this point。 I think this was a good course。

I'd likely rate TAW better if I were in the target audience, but I started the book with only a small bit of interest in unlocking my "creative side" and this book did little to change it。 To be fair, I also didn't follow the explicit instructions of implementing the chapters week by week 。 The core ideas are solid。 I think most people would get 80%+ of the value of the book by simply implementing daily "morning pages" and weekly "artist's dates"。 I'd only recommend reading the book if you need I'd likely rate TAW better if I were in the target audience, but I started the book with only a small bit of interest in unlocking my "creative side" and this book did little to change it。 To be fair, I also didn't follow the explicit instructions of implementing the chapters week by week 。 The core ideas are solid。 I think most people would get 80%+ of the value of the book by simply implementing daily "morning pages" and weekly "artist's dates"。 I'd only recommend reading the book if you need handholding and/or get inspired by famous quotes and random stories of success。 。。。more

There is a reason why this book is recommended This is book is amazing, the tasks make you think deep。 Her writing is amazing。 Most of all this book heals, what we might not know is broken。This is not a one time read。 It is one to reread。Definitely there is a reason why this good is recommended。 We know everything but we。。。The book really will help you whether you are an artist or not。

Best book I ever read

Sarah Proietti

A must read for any creative。 This book has helped me unblocked a lot of things to help better myself as a artist。

Heath Salzman

I love that this book focuses on how we are all made or be creative and gives tangible steps and encouragements to cultivate that creativity。 I particularly like the idea of “morning pages”: writing three pages of long-hand stream-of-consciousness to help clarify one’s mental life。 I’d like to try it at some point。

I remember my mom getting this book in the 90s, but I never would have picked it up myself if it wasn't for Marlee Grace。 I get her email newsletter and a few months ago she encouraged her subscribers to try out The Artist's Way。 She said to try it even if our initial reaction was skeptical。 She said to try it even if we didn't resonate with the ample mentions of God in this book。 I am a folk artist by trade, and was experiencing some of that awful artist's block, so I figured, what the hell? I joined Marlee's Patreon, got added to the Discord chat, and got a copy of the book。It's a 12 week program, which comes from Cameron's experience with AA。 Right away, my skepticism was peaking but I trusted Marlee and kept on。 Honestly, I often felt a little embarrassed having this on my "currently reading" list for 2。5 months because I always assumed TAW was a 90s new age gimmick。 I wouldn't have made it through this book if not for the Discord chat。 There's a whole lot of privilege and assumptions that are completely unaware of that privilege in this book, and being able to vent and discuss in the chat was very helpful。 As I'd been warned, there were lots of God references, which can be alienating if you're not spiritually-aligned with Cameron。 Also, it was published in 1992, when one could not even imagine the impacts of doom scrolling or Zoom fatigue。 Nowadays I think a lot of the stress, blocks, and anxiety we face is shaped by the internet in ways this book could not address。 I can't fault the book for that, but I think it's worth noting。 Parts of the book felt insensitive, irrelevant, or even offensive, at least when reading in 2021。The program requires two consistent tasks: daily "morning pages", 3 pages of free writing done first thing in the morning; and weekly "artist dates", feeding your artistic side。 I did the morning pages, on average, about 5 days a week (though not at all when I was traveling for 10 days), and I rarely did the artist dates, aside from watching some documentaries (to be fair I live in the middle of nowhere and my car was in the shop for at least half of this program)。 I have come to really like the morning pages。 I already write in a journal every evening, but with my morning pages it's more of a spontaneous brain dump which really does clear the mind so one can better focus on creative projects。 We got to talk about these tasks and our success rates of adhering to them in the Discord, which I appreciated。 I had read The War of Art by Steven Pressfield years ago (which was written a decade after TAW) and the ideas were often similar to Cameron's, though in Pressfield's case, compressed into a shorter book that doesn't have any homework or time commitments。 Spending 12 weeks on this book, though, was a really good exercise in exploring the sources of artist block and artistic habits in general, and I do feel that I got a lot out of it, even if I didn't do everything the book told me to。 There were parts that were a bit too religious, or as I mentioned, too blind to the realities of those with less privilege than the author, but all in all I'm surprised and glad Marlee encouraged me to check this out。 It made me realize a lot of things about my inner critic, my creative process, and the sources of some of my neuroses, and I even plan to keep up with the morning pages。 I'd give it 2。5 stars if I could, but it's not quite 3。 。。。more

Good book, but not something I find as useful given my conditioning。 A lot of people swear by this book though。
